Wool made Wales very rich for many centuries so find out why it was worth more than gold.
Apart from being renowned for our Welsh Blacks – a breed of beef cattle around for hundreds of years, perhaps Wales is best known for those four-legged woolly beasts called sheep – baah! Wool truly was worth more than gold years ago, so come on tour with me to find out how and why this became true here in Wales.
Watching a dog herding a small flock of sheep is a truly inspiring sight and an artform which takes years if ever to perfect. Sheepdog Trials started in Wales over 100 years ago and continue to this day with top dogs fetching thousands of pounds and countries competing from all over the world.
Trefriw Woollen Mill
Continue a wool tour with a visit to Trefriew Woollen Mill shop, where they still make Welsh blankets today and which were family heirlooms handed down through a family in Wales.
Finally for those who like their crafts, you can include a visit to Abakhan Fabrics, Hobby & Home on the North Wales coast near Holywell, which stocks a huge range of wool and other materials, should you enjoy knitting or crocheting plus there’s a large café and shop on site to explore.
