Many of the sumptuous houses of Wales are still here for you to explore, whether inherited or money made, there are fascinating Downtown Abbey lifestyles and scandals for you to discover

Going back to a time where it was very much the “haves” and the “have nots” and everyone knew their place, there are some fascinating stately homes to explore in Wales.

Stunning Bodrhyddan Hall & Garden is open midweek and offers a fascinating tour including authentic Egyptian mummies plus tea and cake and an opportunity to explore the gardens.

Brynkinalt Hall has links to Ireland and the Duke of Wellington and their descendants still live in the Hall today. One of the family will take you on a tour after which there’s home-made cake and tea.

Many houses are owned today by the National Trust, a UK wide charity which takes care of many of our stately homes now, but many are privately run and offer something rather special.

Erddig is now owned and run by the National Trust and has a great upstairs & downstairs theme and Plas Newydd on the Isle of Anglesey, also National Trust, has stories about the 1^st Marquess of Anglesey and his heroics at the famous Battle of Waterloo with the Duke of Wellington. Another Plas Newydd, sitting above the bustling market town of Llangollen in North East Wales, tells the story of the “Ladies of Llangollen” who scandalised Georgian society in the late 1700s escaping from Ireland to Wales.
